Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif stepped down as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman on Thursday, but the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has raised concerns over not being taken into consideration.
PPP Central Election Cell member Aamir Hassan said that PPP was not consulted before this important decision. PPP has concerns over this move of the PML-N.
PPP MNA Shazia Marri said that PPP was not taken on board over the replacement of the PAC Chairman. She said that the decision was ‘one-sided’ and PPP was not taken into confidence over Rana Tanveer’s nomination.
"We are surprised at the decisive. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was present in the parliament. He was not informed and neither were the PAC members."
Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi rejected PML-N’s claims saying that "the PML-N has (already) taken PPP and the rest of the opposition parties in confidence over Tanvir's appointment".
The PML-N's joint parliamentary party on Thursday decided to nominate Rana Tanvir as the new head of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) after party president Shahbaz Sharif stepped down from the position.
The parliamentary party statement said that Shehbaz was never keen to be PAC chairman but only accepted the role on the insistence of the joint committee.
Although no reasons were given as to why Shehbaz stepped down, Abbasi said that he did so because he believed he was not giving enough time and doing justice to the role. The party, as per the procedure, will now have to write a letter to the National Assembly speaker regarding the change.
