Dhaka: Abdul Majed, the military captain who was sentenced to death in 1998 for carrying out the assassination of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was arrested in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Al Jazeera reported that Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that the arrest after 45 years of the ruthless murderer was the ‘biggest gift’ for Bangladesh this year, as 2020 marks the 100th birth anniversary of Mujibur Rahman.
Abdul Majed was caught in Dhaka after many years of hiding in India. The police claimed that it was not confirmed how or when he returned to Bangladesh.
In 1998, Majed was sentenced to a death along with eleven kother assailants for their involvement in the August 15, 1975 killing of Rahman and most of his family members by a group of army officials.
Current Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
After the arrest, Majed is reported to be jailed and jail authorities will complete procedures for his execution but it was not immediately clear when.
Bangladesh was identified as east Pakistan before the war of 1971 which lasted for nine months and took the lives of about 3 million people. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman lead the movement for a separate autonomous state.
