The novel coronavirus has claimed 21 lives in Pakistan and 1,658 cases have been confirmed across the country to date.
Pakistan, despite its close proximity with China – from where the deadly virus originated in December last year – remained unscathed until February 26 when a young man from Karachi tested positive for the novel coronavirus. He had returned from Iran – one of the worst-hit countries.
After a brief pause following the first case, COVID-19 cases witnessed a sharp surge as more pilgrims returning from Iran and Saudi Arabia tested positive.
The Punjab health authorities have reported 45 new coronavirus cases in the province within the last 24 hours. Moreover, the government’s official coronavirus portal has reported eight new confirmed cases in Islamabad, and 12 in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The virus has claimed 21 lives in the country; seven in Sindh; six in Punjab; five in KP; two in GB; and one in Balochistan. On the other hand, 28 patients have fully recovered successfully and have discharged from the hospitals.
The national tally of coronavirus confirmed cases has risen to 1958, with the provincial governments of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan confirming 638, 502, 192, 141 cases respectively. Meanwhile, 128 cases in Gilgit-Baltistan, 51 in Islamabad, and six in Kashmir have reported to date.
