Minister Shireen Mazari Demands Hayat Baloch’s Killers Be ‘Punished’

Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari has said the Frontier Corps official involved in the cold-blooded murder of Hayat Baloch in Turbat should be punished, saying such incidents have no place in a democratic society.

Speaking in the National Assembly, the federal minister denounced the killing and said strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) must be ensured so that such incidents could be averted in the future.

“Progress has been made in Hayat Baloch’s case,” the minister told the lower house of parliament. “FC officials involved in the murder have been arrested and a case has been registered. IGFC South has visited the house of the family and assured justice,” the human rights minister added.

According to the minister, "We must acknowledge that the atmosphere is changing and will continue to change."

“Such violence and killing of any citizen across the country, including in Balochistan and its tribal districts, is unacceptable in a democratic country,” she said. “The killers of Hayat Baloch must be punished," reiterated the human rights minister.

Muhammad Hayat Baloch was killed by enraged personnel of the Frontier Corps on Thursday after a convoy of the security forces was targeted with an IED nearby. Hayat, who was a student of Karachi University, was initially punched and kicked and then shot dead while his sister and mother pleaded for mercy.

The family of the victim then lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the Turbat police. The parents of Hayat Baloch have informed the cops that they can identify the murderer of their son. According to SSP (Turbat), an internal investigation by the Frontier Corps found that the accused personnel ‘reacted in haste’ and handed him over to the police for further probe into the extra-judicial killing of the 25-year-old student.
