Trump Impeached By House Of Representatives, Senate To Decide Further
United States President Donald Trump has become the third US leader to be impeached by the House of Representatives, which formally charged him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in a historic move.

According to Reuters, the Democrats-led House of Representatives on Wednesday passed two articles of impeachment that will have Donald Trump face a trial in the Senate.

The US senate, which is controlled by the Republicans, will likely be a friendlier environment for the US president. Trump’s trial in the Senate, if leads to a conviction, will result in his removal from office.

In the more than two-century history of the United States, no president has been removed from office by impeachment. An impeachment would require a two-third majority in the Senate, which consists of 100 members. According to Reuters, this means that at least 20 Republicans would have to side with the Democrats if the impeachment is to be successful.

Current reports, however, indicate that it is not likely that this number of Republicans would join the Democrats.

Republican Senator Mitch McConnel has predicted that it was completely unlikely that his chamber would remove the president.

Donald Trump has been accused of abusing his power by putting pressure on Ukraine to investigate rival Joe Biden and allegations that the Democrats conspired with Ukraine to interfere in the 2016 US presidential elections.

The Democrats maintain that the US president held back $391 million in security aid, that Ukraine needed to fight Russia-backed separatists, in order to force the eastern Europe state to interfere in the 2020 elections by smearing Joe Biden, who is a candidate for the presidency.

Moreover, the second article accused the US president of hindering the affairs of the Congress by directing the administration and agencies not to follow House subpoenas for testimony and documents related to impeachment.

Meanwhile, Trump, who is also a candidate in the presidential elections next year, has denied wrong-doing and called the impeachment inquiry a ‘witch-hunt’.

In a recent rally, the US president referred to democrats and said, “They’re the ones who should be impeached, every one of them.”
