IHC Bar Association Punishes Lawyers Who Ignored Strike Call

The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) has suspended the membership and licenses of 60 lawyers who attended court hearings despite a call for a strike to protest against what lawyers termed police brutality against them during the violence at Punjab Institute of Cardiology.

Following the attack on PIC by lawyers, the Pakistan Bar Council gave a strike call to protest the ‘brutality’ of the doctors and police against them. However, some lawyers refused to accept the directives and attended court hearings on the day of the strike.

Subsequently, the IHCBA suspended their membership for disobeying its directives. In a notice issued by the IHCBA Joint Secretary Waqar Gondal to the Islamabad Bar Council, the bar council stated that despite a strike notice issued by the Islamabad Bar Council, lawyers disobeyed the directions and hence their membership of IHCBA stood suspended.

It further said that the licenses of the lawyers were suspended for one month and necessary disciplinary action would be taken against them.
