The Asia-Pacific Group at the United Nations on Thursday unanimously endorsed India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat of the Security Council for two-year term – 2021-22.
And interestingly, Pakistan was among the countries which extended unanimous support to India. The Asia Pacific Group comprises 55 states.
The Asia-Pacific Group’s support means India now has a much better chance to get elected for the UN Security Council.
The non-permanent members of the UN Security Council are elected according to following formula.

In a tweet, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin thanked all the states for their support.

The non-permanent members of the UN Security Council are elected according to following formula.
- Five from African and Asian states
- One from Eastern European states
- Two from Latin American states
- Two from Western European and other states
