The government has started consulting with the opposition parties over the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) as the two-year term of military courts is coming to an end.
Only two weeks are left until the term of military courts, which were constituted under the NAP to try civilians charged with terrorism, expire.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has sent letters to the leaders of political parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif.
The foreign minister has invited leaders of the political parties on March 28.
Dawn reported that ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has invited the political parties as it doesn’t have majority in Parliament to get the amendment passed. So, it is seeking assistance from other political parties.
Both PPP and PML-N are opposed to the extension of military courts’ term.
The government has come under a lot of criticism for non-implementation of NAP from the opposition parties, particularly from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in a National Assembly session, had asked the government why the NAP hasn’t been implemented yet and terrorists continue to use country’s soil.
