According to reports, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid has stated that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif can be given permission to return to Pakistan within 24 hours, if a written request to that effect is made.
Nevertheless, he emphasized that guarantees of life and death cannot be given, since those are “with God.” Furthermore, he noted that the former PM's passport has expired, but that the Interior Ministry will do what it is “authorized to.”
The Interior Minister's comment comes in the wake of disputes within the opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). Former President and PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari was quoted as saying to PML-N's Nawaz Sharif that he ought to return to Pakistan to lead the struggle against the government. Zardari had said also that PPP lawmakers would tender their resignations from assemblies only if Sharif returns to the country.
Moreover, the former president has also been quoted saying that Nawaz should be ready to go to jail if he is serious in his stance against the government.
