Asad Umar has stepped down as finance minister, he announced via his Twitter account on Thursday.

The minister said that he was offered the energy portfolio but refused to accept it saying that he has received Prime Minister Imran Khan's consent to not take any cabinet position.

"As part of a cabinet reshuffle PM desired that I take the energy minister portfolio instead of finance. However, I have obtained his consent to not take any cabinet position. I strongly believe Imran Khan is the best hope for Pakistan and InshAllah will make a Naya Pakistan," he said.

Geo News reports that Shaukat Tareen could be appointed Finance Secretary as the PTI plans not to have a minister for some time.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) made major shuffles within its cabinet and removed 5 ministers including Finance Minister Asad Umar, media reports claimed earlier on Monday.

Media reorts claimed that “at least five cabinet ministers were changed, including finance, interior and petroleum ministers”. The news claimed that Asad Umar was removed as Finance Minister and would be given the Petroleum Ministry instead.

It was further claimed that the decision was taken in light of the performance of the 5 ministers. On March 29, Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced to review performance of all of his cabinet ministers.

The government sources, however, died media claims.
