Party Members Opposing PM Imran On Nawaz’s Exit

Prime Minister Imran Khan is facing resistance from his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, over his decision to allow former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to go abroad for medical treatment, with party members saying that the decision would be a complete defeat of the government’s accountability narrative.

According to a report in Express Tribune, a senior PTI leader told the premier to learn a lesson from the departure of former dictator General (r) Pervez Musharraf and how it badly affected the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as it was unable to come to terms with the fact that the dictator had evaded punishment.

The senior leader also expressed that the prime minister stated repeatedly that he would not give an NRO-type deal to anyone, but Nawaz’s departure would create such an impression.

The PTI leader said that the party got a huge support in the last elections on the basis of its ‘accountability narrative’ and Nawaz’s departure would be a political loss for PTI.

Party members also expressed apprehension over giving concessions to Nawaz Sharif amid the backdrop of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl’s  (JUI-F) Azadi March.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has revealed that some members of the federal cabinet were not in favour of removing the former PM’s name from the Exit Control List.

Moreover, a section of PTI members was also under the belief that Nawaz’s departure would benefit the government politically as the PTI would be able to focus on governance. These members grounded their argument in how PML-N was able to rule peacefully by sending Musharraf abroad.
