Lahore’s FAST University has expelled six graduate students for sharing memes about the administration and faculty on a Facebook group. The social media activists are condemning the ‘shameful’ act of the university administration using the hashtag #ShamOnFAST
The administration of engineering university issued a notification on Saturday, according to which six students were expelled, and academic grades of several other students were lowered for posting and sharing memes about the employees of the university on a Facebook group.
Moreover, 12 graduated students were asked to submit a written apology letter to the university’s administration and upload the same on Facebook within 10 days of issuance of the notification. “Failure to comply with the orders will render the respondent liable for either cancellation of the degree; or blacklisting; or reporting to authorities for trial under cyberbullying and harassment laws; or all of the mentioned punishments,” the notification read.
Academics and social media activists have reacted strongly to FAST’s decision to expel students merely for posting memes on social media.
Historian and activist Ammar Ali Jan said, “Disciplinary action against students at FAST is another example of how students are policed by university administrations. Young people today are not viewed as assets. They are viewed as a law and order problem. This approach is unjust & unsustainable.”

A students rights’ body Progressive Students Collective tweeted: "Today We have witnessed another utterly shameful incident of FAST University Lahore’s administration. 13 existing students are threatened to be rusticated and 12 graduated students are threatend to cancel their degrees only because they made memes about the inefficient.”
