US Ready To Play Pacemaker Role To Ease Pak-India Tensions: Trump

United States (US) President Donald Trump on Thursday said that the country was ready to help ease tensions between Pakistan and India and that US was keeping a ‘close eye’ on the recent events.

“We are keeping a close eye on what’s happening between Pakistan and India. We are hopeful that both Pakistan and India will avoid further escalation. There is a lot of dislike unfortunately so we have been in the middle trying to help them both out,” Trump said.

The US president also said the country was receiving ‘reasonably decent’ news about the situation, adding that the decades old disputes might find a solution soon. He said the US was hopeful that the situation would get better. He said US was willing to help both the countries resolve the Kashmir issue.

“Peace in the South Asian region is our top priority,” he said.

The Pulwama Attack

On February 14, 44 Indian paramilitary soldiers were killed when a van packed with explosives rammed into a convoy in occupied-Kashmir. Indian government and media blamed Pakistan for the attack, but the latter categorically rejected it calling the allegations lies.

Prime Minister Imran Khan offered India that Pakistan was ready to take action if India provides evidence that elements in Pakistan carried out the attack. He also said that the Kashmir issue could only be resolved via talks.

Indian violation of LOC, attack in Balakot

On Tuesday, Indian jets intruded Pakistan’s airspace from the Muzzafarabad sector but were turned away dropping payload in haste after the Pakistan Air Force went on chase. The Indian media claims to have killed 350 ‘terrorists’ via their airstrikes during ’21 minute stay’ in the country’s airspace.

Pakistan rejected the claims saying that only a few trees were damaged and one person was injured. Pakistan also said that India must ready itself for a surprise and that the country will respond at the right time and place.

Later in the day, there were reports of Indian aggression along the LOC which resulted in civilian casualties in the Sialkot sector.

Indian jets shot down, Pilot taken into custody

On Wednesday, two Indian jets were shot down by a vigilant PAF for intruding into Pakistan’s territory. Indian Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was taken into custody.

DG ISPR confirmed the arrest and said that Pakistan aimed peace, but had to respond to Indian aggression. He asked the international community to intervene and help bolster the peace process. Prime Minister Imran Khan also reiterated Pakistan’s peace-friendly stance saying that war was not the solution to the crisis.
