PML-N MNA Grills CCPO Lahore During Standing Committee Meeting

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Mohsin Ranjha has grilled Lahore CCPO Umar Sheikh in a meeting of a National Assembly standing committee for making insensitive remarks in the motorway gang-rape case.

The lawmaker told the CCPO that he should be ashamed for making such a statement, reported Dunya News. He added: 'You should change your thinking and attitude towards the incident. You are answerable for your performance."

Sheikh, who was tasked to probe the rape of a woman on the motorway had questioned the choices of the woman, saying the woman should have taken a different route –a less deserted one– and checked her petrol tank before embarking on her journey.

Sheikh said that he was surprised that the woman — a mother of three travelling alone at night– chose to travel via Ring Road instead of taking the GT Road that was relatively ‘safe’.

However, after national outrage over his controversial remarks, CCPO Umar Sheikh extended an apology to the rape survivor and all sections of society for his statement that blamed the woman for the rape on the motorway.

The lawmaker also asked the CCPO about the inclusion of terror charges in the FIR against PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and other workers. At this, CCPO Sheikh asked the lawmaker to tell if two FIR can be registered over a single incident?

Mohsin Ranjha took exception his remarks and told the Lahore police chief that he was not here to ask questions. In a tweet about the inclusion of 7 ATA charges in the case against PML-N workers, Ranjha said: "When challan has not been prepared, its unlawful as the insertion of a new offence can only be made at the scrutiny of challan's stage."

Terror charges against Maryam

On Sept 5, the Lahore police added terrorism charges to a case registered against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz, her husband Muhammad Safdar, and 14 members of PML-N for allegedly clashing with police officials outside the National Accountability Bureau office at Thokar Niaz Baig last month.

On Aug 12, Maryam Nawaz was summoned by the accountability watchdog in a case pertaining to a transfer of land. As she reached the NAB office, the things got heated, resulting in stone-pelting and baton-charge. Police claim that PML-N had started the clash, where PML-N leadership claims that the police targetted them unfairly.

Subsequently, the accountability watchdog had filed a case at Chung Police Station, alleging PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz instigated party workers upon provocation by her husband, Muhammad Safdar Awan.

Taking to Twitter, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif condemned the incorporation of the anti-terrorism law clause in the FIR. “[This] shows how coward and insecure Niazi government is. PTI is brazenly promoting the politics of vendetta and revenge,” he added.
