Reports are coming in that historian and lecturer at Lahore's Forman Christian College Dr. Ammar Ali Jan was prevented from entering the campus of Punjab University after he was invited to a welcome party for students. The event was organized by a student organization, the Pashtun Student Council. A number of commentators on social media have already expressed their condemnation for such measures on the part of the authorities.
In a live video broadcast by the Facebook page of another student organization, the Progressive Students Collective, Dr. Ammar Ali Jan revealed that he had been invited to a similar event last year.
But since afternoon today, he began receiving calls warning him of the possibility of arrest, in an attempt to dissuade him from attending. On his arrival at the PU campus, police deployment denied him access to the premises.
The academic went on to express his view that militarization of college campuses in the country is deplorable.
Dr. Ammar Ali Jan is among a number of academics who have announced their support for the the upcoming country-wide Student Solidarity March, led by the Progressive Students' Collective and scheduled for the 29th of November 2019.
