The Ministry of Defence has refused to remove former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) director general retired Lt Gen Asad Durrani's name from the Exit Control List (ECL), accusing him of interacting with Indian intelligence agency RAW and other ‘hostile elements’ since 2008.
In response to a request to remove the former DG ISI’s name from the no fly list, the defence ministry expressed the fear that he may be involved in future publications harming Pakistan’s interest.
A book, titled ‘The Spy Chronicles: RAW, ISI and the Illusion of Peace’, that Durrani co-authored with Amarjit Singh Dulat, the former head of India's Research and Analysis Wing spy agency in 2018, landed him in trouble.
Following the publication, the Military Intelligence (MI) had asked the interior ministry to place Durrani on the country’s no-fly list, which it did in May 2018. He then moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the decision in 2019.
The defence ministry filed its answer in the IHC on Wednesday. It told the court that the former ISI chief's name was put on the ECL due to ‘his involvement in anti-state activities’.
