CCPO Lahore Umar Shaikh Says He Is Pakistan’s Best Police Officer

Lahore CCPO Umar Shaikh, who was recently appointed as the city police chief, said that he was the 'best officer' of the Police Service of Pakistan.

Speaking in a Geo News show regarding the recent rift with former Punjab IG Shoaib Dastgir, Shaikh said he was made the city police chief because he was the 'best officer' and challenged his colleagues to prove otherwise.

Shaikh made these comments while alluding to a decision made by a committee headed by FPSC chairman that refused to promote him to Grade 21. The committee that included four IGPs as members also relegated Shaikh to 'C' category.

Speaking about his achievement over the two-decade long career, Shaikh said he had served as DPO in at least 10 districts of Sindh and Punjab. In addition, he was also selected for a special course in Washington, the CCPO added.

Speaking about the rift with IG, he said that some words were said in the heat of the moment and he was ready to apologise to the police chief for the apparent misconduct. However, according to Shaikh, despite multiple attempts, he couldn't reach the IG to convey his apology that 'disrespect was not intended'.

About his meeting with CM Buzdar, Shaikh said the chief minister asked me to resolve this issue in-house. "At this, I told CM Buzdar that I was willing to apologise to the IG unconditionally."

About the PML-N claims that he was appointed as the city police chief to target the PML-N workers, he said he was not brought in to suppress the opposition, nor was he appointed on the suggestion of any PM's aide.  He said the police have nothing to do with the terror charges, as they were added in the FIR on the orders of the prosecution department.

Punjab IGP removed:

Inam Ghani became the new police head of Punjab after the government removed Inspector General of Police Shoaib Dastgir on Tuesday after a reported rift between newly-appointed CCPO Umar Shaikh and the police chief. Dastgir, who was touted as the best police chief by the prime minister at the time of his appointment, had refused to work with Umar Seikh.

Dastgir had held meetings with PM Imran Khan and Punjab CM Usman Buzdar over the issues of the new city police chief, Umar Shaikh, but the meeting ended without any agreement on the issue. Eventually, Dastigir was removed from the post after the federal and Punjab governments decided not to transfer Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore.

After his appointment, Prime Minister Imran Khan kept on singing the praises of Dastgir as the new police chief, who went after the ‘hardened criminals’ with no discrimination.

In another instance, the PM showered Dastgir with praises for going after the ‘mafias that are based in every district’. Congratulating the IG in a public ceremony in Jan, the PM said he put the ‘dangerous gangsters’ and ‘robbers’ on a leash.
