KARACHI: A third-year woman student of Hamdard University was shot dead during an incident of mugging in the metropolis on Thursday morning, according to police and the girl’s family.
The victim, identified as Misbah, was sitting in a car with her father while waiting for her university's bus near Mochi Mor in Gulshan-i-Iqbal neighbourhood when two muggers approached them on a motorcycle, according to her uncle Kashif Ahmed.
Ahmed said that the robbers mugged the girl's father at gunpoint, while adding that they then walked to the other side of the car and opened fire at Misbah, which hit her near the eye.
He further said that the muggers did not take anything from the girl and only looted their father. The girl and her family are residents of Abid Colony area.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) East Amir Farooqi termed the incident as a case of robbery.
He said that the girl was not shot dead on resistance. Instead, one of the robbers dropped his gun and after picking it up in haste, he panicked and opened fire at the girl.
Witnesses later told police that the muggers were young and they fled the crime scene towards Sohrab Goth after the incident.
