Two Dolphin Personnel Face Suspension For Misbehaving With Youth In Lahore
Punjab Deputy Inspector General (Operations) has suspended two personnel of the Dolphin Squad for allegedly torturing a youth.

The incident took place on Cavalry Ground bridge and was caught on a camera installed on a passing motorcycle. The video showed two Dolphin Squad personnel confronting a youth for parking his motorcycle on the roadside. The video also showed them misbehaving and slapping the boy.

The Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Arif Nawaz took notice of the incident and directed the field officers to submit an inquiry report. However, DIG operations suspended both the officers and directed Dolphin Squad Superintendent of Police (SP) Bilal Zafar to conduct an inquiry against them. The two officers belonged to Dolphin team 302.

According to a press release, the youth was doing a wheelie and a case was registered against him at the Naseerabad police station.

Recently, the Dolphin Squad has faced criticism for behaviour deemed detrimental to public safety. In May, the force had shot two citizens in two separate incidents. The first incident involved a woman being shot by Dolphin Squad personnel. The woman was returning home from a hospital and died as a result of being shot. In the other incident, Dolphin officials shot a youth in Gulberg. Instead of being provided with first aid, the boy was taken to a police station and tortured.

Similar incidents had occurred last year whereby Dolphin personnel had shot innocent people during exchanges of fire or as self-defence.

To deal with the issue, refresher courses had been introduced for Dolphin Squad personnel, which according to police officials was yielding results as the number of complaints against the squad were decreasing.
