Punjab IGP To Appear Before Senate Committee Regarding Deaths In Police Custody
Following the deaths of three suspects due to alleged torture by the police in one week, Punjab police is under severe criticism as people call for the force to contain the use of torture and illegal detention.

The Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights has taken note of the alleged torture and death of the person who was recorded breaking into an ATM machine.

The chair of the committee, Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, has ordered the inspector general of police (IGP) Punjab and the Rahimyar Khan district police officer to appear before the committee on Sept 12.


Moreover, the committee has asked for a report into the matter from the Ministry of Human Rights.

Punjab police have been under widespread criticism following the recent deaths of three people due to alleged torture. On Sunday, a man whose video of breaking into an ATM machine had gone viral on social media, died in police custody in Rahim Yar Khan. On Monday, a man who had been recovered from a torture cell run by Gujjarpura Police succumbed to his injuries.



Moreover, on Monday, a man arrested from Lahore’s P.F Colony, who had been arrested by North Cantt Police died due to injuries from alleged torture by police.

According to the Pakistani constitution, Pakistan Penal Code and Police Order 2002, torture or violence by police officials is strictly prohibited and is punishable by imprisonment up to ten years with fine.
