PM Imran Announces An Increase In Reward For Whistle-blowers
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said the reward money for whistle-blowers who help the government in the detection and subsequent confiscation of benami properties will be increased from 3 percent to 10 percent.
Prime Minister while addressing a ceremony pertaining to the Ehsaas program made the following remarks. The prime minister said that rules would be amended to increase incentives for whistle-blowers.
Despite the reward for whistle-blowers in the past, the whole concept has not been able to bear fruit yet. As the incumbent government is in pursuit of benami properties, PM Imran announced that wealth recovered from said properties will be dedicated to the Ehsaas program.
Prime Minister Khan also quoted Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif who says that Imran Khan should pressurise the opposition parties to the extent he [Imran Khan] himself can bear.
The Prime Minister said, “My message for him is that I can bear even death. But I know that you can’t bear death because you want to enjoy your looted money .”
The PM’s announcement regarding whistle-blowers comes as the government announced tax amnesty ended last week. Under the scheme, the incumbent government enabled citizens to whiten their assets by paying taxes ranging from 1.5% to 6%, including both local and foreign assets.
In an article titled,” Secret Service” by a former civil servant, Syed Saadat published in Dawn, the writer mentioned professional whistleblowers who can act like ‘Secret Service” within organizations to look into financial embezzlement.
“We need a secret service to be introduced to each department. An intelligence-gathering organisation comprising specialized individuals with the job description to understand the organisation’s structure and gather information as well as evidence of financial embezzlement and bribe-taking. They would act as ‘professional whistle-blowers.”
