91% Of Hate Crimes Recorded In India In A Decade Since 2009 Were Under Modi Rule
Nearly 91% (262 of 287) of hate crimes motivated by religious-bias recorded in the decade between January 2009 and April 30, 2019, came under Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule.

According to Factchecker Database, 99 persons were killed and at least 703 injured in hate crimes motivated by religious bias between May 2014 and April 30, 2019, across 23 of 36 states and union territories (UTs) in India.

More than half of these union territories including Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttarakhand only recorded hate crimes after 2014, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over.

Of the 263 hate crimes recorded by Factchecker Database, 71% were against religious minorities, mainly Muslims and Christians. Muslims, who comprise 14% of India’s population, were the victims in 61% of cases (160) and Christians, 2% of the population, in 11% (27 cases).



Moreover, 14% Hindus were victims of hate crimes while 1% Sikhs were subjected to hate based on religion. The religious background of 14% of the remaining people subjected to hate crimes could not be identified.

Among 182 cases in which the religion of the alleged perpetrator was known, 81% of cases involved Hindus (148 cases), Hate Crime Watch shows. In 14% of the cases, the perpetrators were known to be Muslims.

The report also revealed that cow protection was one of the major reasons for hate-motivated attacks. 77 such hate crimes recorded in the last five years. The other most frequent causes of hate crimes were opposition to interfaith relationships (15%) and communal clashes (10%).

In comparison to BJP's tenure, 25 hate crimes recorded across 12 states between January 2009 and May 23, 2014, in which three were killed and 17 injured.
