Minister Fawad Chaudhry Terms SC Verdict On Army Chief Extension 'Flawed'
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said, while in an interview with the Voice of America (VOA) Urdu, that the Supreme Court’s (SC) verdict on the Army Chief extension is flawed.

According to him, the SC cannot and should not tell the legislature on what it can and cannot legislate on. This means that the SC is then dictating the parliament and this goes against Article 243 of the constitution.

The SC, on 28th November, had allowed the Army Chief a six-month extension after pointing out the flaws in his extension made by the government. It dictated the government to legislate on this. The government needs a two thirds majority to extend the incumbent’s tenure.

Furthermore, Chaudhry also said that the fact that the constitution does not detail the tenure of an Army Chief is because it wants to empower the position of the Prime Minister in this matter. This is why the court’s decision is flawed.

He further said that the government is still waiting upon the court to give its detailed verdict on the matter of the Army Chief’s extension.

He added that passing legislation on this matter won't be a hurdle because all parties are on the same page due to the Army Chief being an 'apolitical' figure.
