Following an inquiry ordered by Inspector General of Prisons Punjab Shahid Saleem Baig, 11 officials have been suspended from Central Adiala Jail due to allegations that a prisoner was sexually assaulted by another.
Two officials, jail superintendent Chaudhry Saqib Nazeer and the deputy superintendent, have been asked to explain why the incident took place under their supervision.
A news report in Dawn cited the IGP as saying that the Rawalpindi region deputy inspector general of prisons had recommended disciplinary action against the involved officials.
The incident was revealed when a prisoner told Additional District and Sessions Judge Rana Masood Akhtar of the assault while the latter was on a visit to the prison.
The judge had directed that the victim be taken to a hospital. The medical report has still not been received, hence, an FIR is yet to be registered.
To probe the allegations, Rawalpindi region Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Rana Abdul Rauf was appointed as the inquiry officer. The official found 13 people – 11 jail wardens, the superintendent and the deputy superintendent – guilty of negligence.
Among the suspended are five senior wardens. These include Nowsherwan, Ghulam Rabbani, Tahir Shahzad, Rashid Ali and Mohammad Irfan.
