Danyal Bilour, the son of late Awami National Party (ANP) leader Haroon Bilour, on Tuesday resigned from the party claiming that its leadership rescinded on its promise to elect him information secretary in the upcoming intra-party elections.

In his resignation letter, Danyal asserts that the party leadership went back on its promise of allotting him the slot of ANP's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa information secretary, a position that was formerly held by his late father. Haroon Bilour fell victim to a terror attack in the lead up to the 2018 General Election.

“(ANP leadership) wished to have him withdraw his candidacy ─ a feat against the democratic process". "Such behaviour on the party leadership's part, in the face of my many sacrifices for the party, has led to the decision to resign," the letter states.

Senior ANP leader and Haroon's uncle Ghulam Bilour, Haroon's uncle, confirmed the news of Danyal's resignation to DawnNewsTV.

"The party leadership agreed and provided assurances that they would elect Danyal Bilour unopposed…took a u-turn later and asked Danyal to withdraw his nomination.”

"He has not decided to join any party as yet," he added.
