The Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has announced that Pakistan has decided to invite former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh to the inauguration ceremony of the Kartarpur corridor.
He stated that Pakistan held Manmohan Singh in high regard and he would represent the Sikh community.
The foreign minister in his statement also said that they were awaiting Sikh Yatris who would come to take part in the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak.
Last month, following Indian revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir, Pakistan had made clear its intentions of keeping the visa-free border open.
The move to invite a former prime minister of India would not only garner attention at the opening ceremony of the corridor, but if Manmohan Singh decides to accept the invite, the gesture may aid in deescalating the current tensions.
The Kartarpur corridor would be inaugurated in November. A news report in Dawn cited the foreign minister as saying that the Kartarpur corridor was an important project and the prime minister had a personal interest in the project.
