In light of recent tensions on the India-Chinese border, the Indian government has passed an order to ban 59 mobile apps whose host companies are based in China. The apps banned by the government include major platforms like TikTok, VivaVideo, Clean Master, among others.
In a statement, the IT Ministry has claimed that these apps are a national threat to the sovereignty of India and that they have received many complaints of users ahbout data theft from locations outside of India, the Print reported.
“The compilation of these data, its mining, and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” the statement said.

Besides the IT Ministry, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre also suggested that these apps should be shut down in India.
It said, “On the basis of these and upon receiving of recent credible inputs that such apps pose a threat to sovereignty and integrity of India, the Government of India has decided to disallow the usage of certain Apps, used in both mobile and non-mobile Internet-enabled devices,” it said.
