Prime Minister Imran Khan was acquitted by the Anti-Terrorism Court in the parliament attack case on Thursday. The decision came days after the PTI chief petitioned for the acquittal. The case was heard by ATC judge Raja Jawad Abbas who gave a clean chit to the PM.
Earlier, the government had filed a petition for the acquittal of PM from the case. The prosecutor argued that the case was made on the political grounds so it “a waste of time for the court”.
Imran Khan's lawyer Abdullah Babar Awan told the Supreme Court that prosecution was in favor of Khan’s acquittal.
The proceedings against President Arif Alvi have also been stopped since he holds the office of President and egnots immunity. However, the court will continue the proceedings against others in the case. They include Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood, and Planning Minister Asad Umar as well as PTI leaders Aleem Khan and Jahangir Khan Tareen. They have been summoned at the next hearing.
Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri has been declared as a fugitive in the similar case.
In 2014, protestors had attacked the Parliament and Pakistan Television Corporation’s (PTV) office during the anti-government sit-in in staged by PTI and PAT. The then government nominated many prominent leaders of PTI including Imran Khan in the case.
