Urfan Sharif, the father of 10-year-old Sara Sharif, who was convicted last month for her murder, was attacked in prison on Thursday, according to Sky News.
The assault happened at Belmarsh Prison, where Urfan is being held. He suffered cuts to his face and body, which required stitches. Prison staff provided medical treatment for his injuries.
A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed the attack and said that police are investigating the incident. However, they did not release more details, saying it would be inappropriate while the investigation is ongoing. The Metropolitan Police also confirmed they are looking into the assault, but stated that Urfan’s injuries are not life-threatening.
Urfan Sharif and Sara’s stepmother, Beinash Batool, were sentenced to life imprisonment last month after being found guilty of causing Sara’s death. The court heard that the 10-year-old had been subjected to years of abuse, including beatings, burns, and physical restraint, all of which led to her death at the family home in Woking, Surrey.
Sara's death followed years of torture, mostly at the hands of her father, Urfan Sharif. The judge in the case said Sara had endured "unbearable suffering, anxiety, and fear" in her final years. Urfan received a minimum sentence of 40 years, while Batool was sentenced to 33 years. Sara's uncle, Faisal Malik, was also convicted for allowing her death and received a 16-year sentence.
During sentencing, Justice Cavanagh described Sara’s treatment as “despicable” and said it had taken place in front of the rest of the family. He said Sara had been brave and spirited, refusing to be submissive to her father’s harsh discipline.
