The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has demanded the immediate release of journalist Gohar Wazir, who was among the group of 22 individuals detained in Bannu during Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) protests.
Gohar and 21 others were detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance and sent to a jail in Haripur on Tuesday after PTM and Awami National Party workers protested the Kharqamar check-post incident that took place in North Waziristan on Sunday.
"Gohar Wazir should not have to face arrest merely for doing the job of reporting the news, even reporting on controversial events such as protests by the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement," CPJ said in its official statement.
Three people were killed and 15 others, including 5 soldiers, were injured in an exchange of fire when Kharqamar check-post was attacked during PTM protests led by MNAs Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir.
The security forces opened fire at a peaceful PTM rally that included National Assembly members Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir, the party’s sources state, adding that both MNAs managed to leave the scene without incurring any injuries.
However, the security forces stated that the PTM workers attacked a check post forcing the forces to arrest them in retaliation.
