Police in Khanewal stopped an underage marriage and arrested the fathers of the two minors whose marriage was underway.
According to a report in Dawn, the incident occurred on Wednesday as a 15-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were being married.
A case regarding the matter has been registered while legal proceedings have been launched. According to the First Information Report, the case was registered under the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929. The concerned act was amended in the Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Act in 2015 by the Punjab government.
Locals of Kabirwala told media that the children were being forcefully married.
Police had received reports from intelligence agencies about the marriage and raided the location of the marriage on the orders of the District Police Officer. They also arrested the fathers of the children, who happen to be brothers.
Police are currently searching for the Nikah Khwan (marriage officiator), who had managed to escape.
