Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Yousaf Raza Gilani, who was elected as the Leader of the Opposition in Senate earlier today, said that his party wanted to keep the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) intact. Pakistan Muslim League - N (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal has criticised PPP for seeking support from Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) for Gilani's election as opposition leader.
Addressing the media, Gilani defended the PPP's decision to contest Senate elections saying the public's voice should not be neglected. "The Parliament is the voice of the people of Pakistan and we must not neglect this voice," he told media after his success in becoming the leader of the opposition in the upper house of the Parliament.
In response to a question, Gilani said that he is Leader of the Opposition in Senate as well as Chairman Senate in the eyes of the public because the Senate chairman election results were unfair as he was not declared winner despite receiving the required number of votes.
He also said that the benefits of contesting the Senate election were witnessed by everyone after the opposition alliance accepted the PPP's decision to contest the polls.
Further, he said that the PPP would soon hold its Central Executive Committee meeting to decide on resignations from assemblies, as the PDM leadership had given the party time to make decision in this regard.
