The violent riots in the streets of India’s capital New Delhi have claimed the lives of 18 people with at least 200 injured. Many of them in critical situations are admitted in Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
According to Indian media reports, the right-wing goons have vandalised public properties, buildings and attacked journalists. Medical Director Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital Sunil Kumar told media that 18 people have died and more than 200 people have been hurt extremely since Monday.
On Tuesday, the Delhi Police issued shoot-at-sight orders in four areas of Delhi — where looting, arson and rioting of unprecedented scale were reported throughout the day. According Press Trust of India (PTI), the capital's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, after visiting the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, pleaded for the 'madness to stop'.
Home Minister Amit Shah had called a high-level meeting that resolved to enhance surveillance along Delhi’s borders, activate peace committees and ensure coordination between local leaders and cops.
Indian media quoted Muslim Delhi residents as saying that a Hindutva mob attacked the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest site, injuring several people including children in Delhi’s Mustafabad area. A mob of around 50 men gathered and began to pelt stones, and they even vandalised two mosques in the area. The locals rescued several children from the mosque and some have severe injuries.
Protests began in Delhi against the infamous Citizenship Amendment Act on Saturday, but on Monday, the streets of Indian capital became a battlefield between extremist Hindus and Muslim protestors, with rioters armed with stones, swords and even guns out in force.
The riots coincided with the visit of US President Donald Trump, who held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi elsewhere in the vast metropolis on Tuesday. During the visit, the president also highlighted US's ‘very good’ relation with Pakistan. After his talks with Modi, Trump told reporters he had heard about the violence but did not discuss it with the Indian prime minister.
Shocking images on social media platforms have been showing burnt down houses and rampaging mobs wielding rods and sticks. So far 6,000 armed police personnel have been deployed in India’s capital to maintain the law and order situation in the city.
