In a recent interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, comedian Hasan Minhaj shared his experience of being stopped from attending Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political rally in Texas on Sunday, which was inaugurated by US President Donald Trump.
Talking to Meyers, the Indian-American journalist and comedian explained that he could not contain his excitement after hearing that Trump would be delivering an opening speech at the rally. But that was not going to happen.
Minhaj was barred from entering the rally venue as the organisers told him that no seats were available for him and his filming crew. The comedian was also told by organisers that he lacked the credentials to be able to gain entry into the stadium where the rally was being held.
Minhaj also revealed during his interview that he was later told that his comments on The Patriot Act and on Modi’s government were the reasons why he was banned from attending the rally. “I told them that you guys are treating me like Indian Jorge Ramos, this is Trump 101 and it’s Texas,” he told Meyers sarcastically.
Minhaj also shared that he decided to watch the rally on his phone in the stadium’s parking lot and noticed something really ironic.
“So, I’m watching this whole thing on live stream and during the programme, they’re honouring the prominent Indian-Americans who have done so much for our country, be it arts, music or even comedy. And while they’re saying this, they show a photo of me on the big screen and people start clapping!” said the comedian with mock surprise.
“They were honouring me for my comedy but also kicked me out for the same reason. It was the most Indian thing to do,” joked Minhaj. He called subtly called the incident hypocritical. “They were like, ‘We’re proud of you but we’ll never say it to your face’!” he added.
