A police station in Islamabad was attacked by an enraged mob that wanted to lynch a man detained over allegations of blasphemy.
Dawn quoted senior police officers as saying that several villagers came bearing batons and iron rods and attacked the Golra police station. The mob was seeking custody of the blasphemy accused who was detained in the police station after a blasphemy complaint was lodged against him.
The enraged villagers managed to enter the police stations despite the gates being locked by personnel. Offices of moharrar, investigating officers and the station house officer (SHO) were damaged by the mob.
Finally, police reinforcement, which included counterterrorism department's officials, anti-terrorist squad and anti-riot unit reached the police staton to rescue the staff.
It took a whole hour for the personnel to disperse the villagers who also put up resistance. The blasphemy accused was eventually moved to a safer location amid tight security.
