MS, MPhil No Longer Required For Enrolment In A PhD Program, Announces HEC Chairman
Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Tariq Banuri has announced that the requirement for obtaining an MS or MPhil degree for admission to a PhD has been abolished, stating that a person with 16 years of education or BSc can be directly enrolled in the PhD program.

"We had received a lot of complaints regarding the PhD programme, but now universities will have to strictly follow the rules of the doctorate programmes,” he said, while addressing the media in Islamabad.

He also talked about the issues that students are concerned about and reassured them that HEC is working on resolving them. He further stated that students find it hard to gain employment after graduating. Through this new policy he hoped more doors are opened for the students seeking employment.

Under its new policy HEC has now allowed students to obtain a PhD degree in another discipline if the policy makes the cut, in addition to allowing applicants to conduct PhD studies immediately after four years of the BS program.

The policy also eliminates the obligation to submit PhD dissertations for examination to international experts. Dissertations can now also be submitted to Pakistani experts.
