CJ Gulzar Asks Why Govt Spending 'So Much Money' On Coronavirus
Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed said that the top court is more focused on spending the money in the 'quality of services' that are being provided countrywide during the coronavirus crisis.

Dawn reported that he expressed these remarks while hearing the suo motu case regarding measures taken to deal with the coronavirus crisis being heard by a five-member bench.

The court said that the bench was not at all satisfied with the report that was submitted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), saying that it could "find no reason why so much money is being spent on this coronavirus".

The written order said that there are other serious ailments prevailing in the country, from which people are dying daily and those ailments are not being catered to, as much as coronavirus is, and still to no end.

Today’s hearing had the chairperson of the NDMA appearing before the court in order to give an explanation of the money being spent to deal with the pandemic.

NDMA chief Lt Gen Muhammad Afzal was summoned and the CJP asked him about a company that manufactured personal protective equipment.

The CJP also asked if Desto Pakistan Army is a private company. "The machinery for this company has been brought through a special plane," he said.

The NDMA chief explained that Desto (Defence Science & Technology Organisation) was a subsidiary company of Strategic Plans Division Force (SPD).

The chief justice inquired if the machinery for Desto was being ordered from a single Chinese company and said that Pakistan only received substandard material from China. The bench, after questioning NDMA chief, said that the meeting has been fruitful.

Justice Ahmed also inquired about the condition of quarantine centres saying that they were very inefficient. No safety and cleanliness precautions were being practised.
