ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Power was informed on Tuesday that a major transformer of the power generation system at Mangla had been out-of-order for last six months, resulting in the loss of around 400-500 MW of electricity every day power.
Senior government official also said that turning off some tunnels and maintenance work resulted in decreased power generation from Tarbela Dam, but the same had been repaired.
They said the total installed hydel power capacity of WAPDA and the IPPs was 9,387 MW and 382 MW respectively. The average daily generation for WAPDA was stated to 5,191 MW and 252 MW for IPPs, with the maximum generation reaching 5,732 MW and 302 MW respectively.
The committee was also informed that power generation depends highly on the level of water release determined IRSA [Indus River System Authority] because power generation is a by-product of the water release of water.
The committee members that the units producing cheapest electricity should be running at the highest-possible efficiency and the scheduled maintenance must not be carried out in the peak power usage time.
During a briefing by K-Electric on overbilling and unscheduled load shedding as reported in print and electronic media, it was said that it had 29 business centres across the city, thus accessible to all customers.
According to the power company, a large number of illegal hook connections had been removed and replaced by ABC connections. Moreover, the billing is done according to the NEPRA guidelines and the system has a strong check mechanism.
Also, the K-Electric has transformed 6,000 transformers on ABC out of a total of 2700.
The power secretary told the committee that the system in the rest of the country was also being shifted to the ABC transformers.
Discussing electricity theft, the committee called for a quantitative collection and study of data on the highest method of domestic and commercial theft and bring a well-researched proposal of whether the AMI meters are the solution or the ABC.
