India Diverts Its Water Supplies, But Pakistan Has Nothing To Worry About
In the wake of Pulwama Attack, the Indian government has banned Pakistani actors from entering and performing in the country, stopped tomato export and now the neighbouring country has decided to ‘stop the share of water which used to flow to Pakistan’.

India’s transport and water resources minister Nitin Gadkari said through his Twitter account that on orders of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the supply of ‘India’s water share that flows to Pakistan' has been blocked.

“Under the leadership of Hon'ble PM Sri Narendra Modi, Our Govt. has decided to stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. We will divert water from Eastern rivers and supply it to our people in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

But Pakistan has nothing to worry about, says Water Resources Ministry Secretary Khawaja Shumail because it is not Pakistan’s concern what India does with the water from its eastern rivers. He says Gadkari’s comments are not worrisome in context of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT).

“We have neither concern nor objection if India diverts water of eastern rivers and supplies it to its people or uses it for other purposes, as the IWT allows it do so,” He said speaking to Dawn.

Shumail, however, said that Pakistan will raise concerns and protest if India decides to use or divert waters from the Western rivers (Chenab, Indus, Jhelum) which Pakistan has the right to use.

Pakistan is not even worried about the stoppage of tomato export. Agriculture Minister Nauman Langria says Pakistan produces enough quantity in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan and the country does not need tomatoes from India.

Last week, 44 Indian para-military soldiers were killed when a van packed with explosives rammed into a convoy of officers in occupied-Kashmir.

Tensions between Pakistan and India have since been rising as Indian blames Pakistan for the attack. The latter, however, has strongly rejected the allegations and also offered action if Indian provides evidence.
