ISLAMABAD: Two soldiers of the Pakistan Army, including a major, embraced martyrdom in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Friday afternoon, a police official in Mohmand tribal district told Naya Daur.
According to police, an army vehicle was performing routine duty of fencing the Pakistan-Afghanistan border area of Baizai Gorsal gate when an IED device planted on the roadside hit the vehicle. As a result, three soldiers received critical injuries and were shifted to a nearby hospital in Ghalani.
The hospital administration provided first aid to the injured personnel but Major Adeel Shahid and Sepoy Faraz Hussain succumbed to their injuries, while Sepoy Gulfam was shifted to CMH Peshawar in critical condition.
The police official said that security forces later conducted a search operation and cordoned off the area. No arrests were made until the filing of this report.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Asif Ghafoor confirmed the incident through a tweet.
It is important to mention here that after the security operation in erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the militants are targeting soldiers, workers of political parties and peace committee volunteers through IED attacks which has resulted in human losses.
Frontier Corps (FC) Inspector General (IG) Major General Rahat Naseem Ahmed Khan, while briefing a parliamentary committee last week, said that though peace has been restored in the area but IED attacks still posed a threat in the region where army personnel were being targeted on routine basis.
He also said that the FC lacks modern equipment to trace IEDs, while adding that they only have seven Chinese made jammers which were of poor quality and could not trace these roadside bombs, thus adding to human casualties in the area.
The FC IG further said that FC lacked funds to buy better but expensive modern equipment which could effectively trace IEDs. Later, the parliamentary committee directed the Interior Ministry to provide the jammers to the paramilitary force on an urgent basis to secure the lives of civilians and soldiers.
