A senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has offered to give former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf Indian citizenship, owing to the fact that he was born in India and was facing persecution.
BJP Rajhya Sabha (Upper House) Member of Parliament Subramanian Swamy said on Thursday that Musharraf could be granted fast-track citizenship as he was from Daryaganj (New Delhi) and was being persecuted.
The BJP leader’s comments have come at a time when General Musharraf has been awarded a death sentence by a special court in the high treason case.

The Indian MP’s comments also come amid the passage of the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA), which gives citizenship to non-Muslims facing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Swamy further added that in a new CAA to come, citizenship could also be granted to self-acknowledged descendants of Hindus.
