Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed has said that he is disappointed over PMLN and PPP opposing the agreement of ending secret balloting in the Senate elections.
In a case hearing pertaining to presidential reference seeking an opinion on open balloting for the upcoming Senate elections, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed while talking about horse-trading in elections said, “We cannot say whether open balloting will eliminate horse-trading but it is disappointing that the PPP and the PML-N have gone back on their earlier agreement. Both parties had agreed to bring an end to the secret balloting method in the Charter of Democracy but now they are not implementing it.”
The federal government is seeking to make an amendment to the Election Act, 2017 to hold the Senate polls through an open ballot.
At the hearing, Advocate General of Punjab Ahmad Awais sided with Attorney-General for Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan on the matter of holding parliamentarians responsible if they were to violate their respective parties code of discipline.
Violation of the code of conduct, they said, would disqualify them from contesting the Senate polls.
