The coalition of political and religious parties of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) postponed the march towards LOC upon Prime Minister Imran Khan’s request, until his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27.
A committee consisting of the heads of the various parties, headed by AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, met in the Kashmir House in Islamabad on Saturday to make this decision in the wake of Imran Khan’s speech in the Kashmir Solidarity Rally in Muzaffarabad on Friday.
Imran Khan, while addressing the charged crowd in AJK’s capital city, spoke to the Kashmiris, extending understanding towards their desire to ‘trample down the LOC’, as quoted by Mr. Haider earlier on Friday. He said that he could understand the youth’s passion and agitation to help their brethren in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK), but urged them to put faith in his address at the UNGA on the 27th of September.
“Many of you want to cross the LoC, but wait until I tell the world the horrific story of oppression in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK),” stated Zaffar Anwar Ch, Central Chief Organizer of PTI AJK, while quoting the PM’s address.
Tensions between Pakistan and India escalated after New Delhi abrogated provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution to withdraw IOK’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories on August 5, and Pakistan has been utilising various strategies to pressurise the international bodies into holding India accountable and putting a stop to the human rights crisis in IOK. The address in UNGA, and AJK’s postponed, but not cancelled, March are two of the latest strategies that can be potentially effective.
