After gunmen stormed into two mosques of New Zealand and killed 40 people—the number of casualties is said to be higher—during Friday prayers, growing Islamophobia and xenophobia in the west has again caught the attention of the world.
Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he blames this on how Muslims have been demonized by blaming a terror attack by a single Muslim on the entire community after the 9/11 attacks.
He said: “I blame these increasing terror attacks on the current Islamophobia post-9/11 where Islam & 1.3 bn Muslims have collectively been blamed for any act of terror by a Muslim.”
The premier also said that “this has been done deliberately to also demonise legitimate Muslim political struggles”.
PM Khan also condemned the attacks in New Zealand’s Christchurch, saying “this reaffirms what we have always maintained: that terrorism does not have a religion. Prayers go to the victims and their families”.
One of the gunmen has live-streamed the first 17 minutes of the attack, which has been termed by New Zealand police as “distressing”. Facebook and Twitter are yet to block the video.
The shooters are also said to be a white supremacist.
Australian Senator Fraser Anning has also been criticized for sharing Islamophobic remarks after the incident.
He said: “The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program that allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.”
People have called him out saying that this is not free speech but hate speech.
A social media user wrote: “I have reported this tweet to Twitter made in direct reference to the terrorist attack in #Christchurch today. Can you join me in doing so. This isn't free speech, it's hate speech that condones the execution of Muslims today & frankly we bloody expect better from an Oz Senator.”
Turkey’s Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin also said that “this cowardly act shows how anti-Muslim rhetoric and hatred leads to murderous acts.”
He further urged the “world to break its silence over Islamophobic hatred”.
People have also blamed politicians and media for “promoting fear, hatred and division”.
