Quetta: 29 prisoners from different jails of Balochistan have been tested positive for AIDS, revealed a report on Thursday. The said report was submitted by the Balochistan AIDS Control Program.
The control program was requested by the provincial home department to screen inmates from various prisons of Balochistan. According to Dawn, the Control Programme screened 2,300 inmates at 11 jails in the province.
Out of those screened, 29 people were tested positive for HIV. 24 of them are in Central Jail of Gadani, four in District Jail Quetta and one is in District Jail of Loralai.
Dawn quotes AIDS Control Programme spokesperson Dr. Noor as saying that most of the 29 prisoners were drug addicts who used the same syringe multiple times.
He said the prisoners were being treated for the disease, adding that other prisoners would undergo tests too.
