IB Report Had Termed CCPO Umar Sheikh A ‘Womaniser’

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) in an official report on CCPO Lahore Umer Sheikh had described him as 'womaniser' who was 'financially and morally corrupt'.

According to a copy of the report being shared on social media, the incumbent city police chief 'remained involved in corrupt practices for financial gains' during his tenure as a district police officer (DPO) of Sargodha.

The incumbent CCPO was reputed to be financially and morally corrupt -- drinker, gambler, and womaniser-- in the area.

The IB report alleged that the police officer established 'illegal sexual relations with a constable of Punjab Police' during his posting in the area.

"He did not take interest in discharging his official work and solving pubic problems and spent most of his time in gambling during his posting," it added.

"He remained posted as DPO Sargodha from Sep 9, 2006, to Aug 20, 2007. He remained involved in corrupt practices for financial gains. He relied on then DSP City Liaqat Tarar and posted SHOs on his recommendations after getting gratification from them," the IB had alleged.

Sheikh was also allegedly involved in taking bribes from respective SHOs. "Reportedly, Haji Ahmed SHO, Mr Mataa Muhammad Nathoka, and other SHOs gave him Rs1lakh as gratification on monthly basis through DSP Liaqat Tarar."

The report was submitted to Central Selection Board during his posting as the DG Khan RPO.

'Best' police officer:

On Sept 8, Lahore CCPO Umar Sheikh claimed during a TV show that he was the ‘best officer’ of the Police Service of Pakistan. Speaking in a Geo News show regarding the recent rift with former Punjab IG Shoaib Dastgir, Shaikh said he was made the city police chief because he was the ‘best officer’ and challenged his colleagues to prove otherwise.

Shaikh made these comments while alluding to a decision made by a committee headed by FPSC chairman that refused to promote him to Grade 21. The committee that included four IGPs as members also relegated Shaikh to ‘C’ category.

Calls for removal:

The insensitive remarks made by the Lahore police chief pertaining to the rape of a woman on the motorway prompted a strong response from social media activists, who demanded the removal of CCPO Umar Sheikh from the top post for being a ‘rape apologist’.

The statement of the police officer caused a strong reaction on Twitter, resulting in #RemoveCCPOLahore becoming one of the top trends.

Rape on motorway:

A woman was allegedly raped by two men at gunpoint in front of her children after her car ran out of gas near Gujjarpura, Lahore.

Police said the woman, a resident of Gujranwala, was returning to the city from Lahore on Tuesday night when her car ran out of petrol.

Geo News reported that the woman called her husband, who advised her to call Motorway Police for help until he got there. However, the Motorway Police operator excused from helping the woman, saying the emergency beat had not been assigned to anyone.

As she was left to her own devices on the deserted road, two armed men approached the vehicle and smashed its windows. They then took the woman and her children out of the car and took them into a nearby field after cutting the fence along the road to rape her. The report said the woman was also deprived of Rs100,000, jewelry, and ATM cards.
