In the middle of a media talk, Punjab Information Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan whispered in the ear of Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, asking him not to 'criticise the National Accountability Bureau' (NAB) for summoning him in a liquor licence case.
Chohan's apparently unwarranted advice came after a journalist sought 'Pakistan's biggest province's chief minister's' response on the NAB inquiry against him.
Buzdar has been directed by NAB to appear before on Aug 12 for allegedly issuing liquor licence to a Lahore hotel by abusing his powers as the chief executive of the province.
The Punjab CM was facing allegations of using influence to issue the liquor licence to a hotel even though the authority of the issuance of the licences lied with the Excise and Taxation Director-General. Two pleas had been filed in NAB last year, accusing the chief minister of granting the licence illegally. In the light of these pleas, the accountability watchdog had launched an inquiry against the CM.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had opposed the decision to summon Usman Buzdar over the issuance of liquor licence. PPP parliamentary leader in Punjab Assembly Syed Hassan Murtaza said instead of holding the Punjab CM accountable over alleged mega corruption and misuse of authority, the bureau was presenting him as ‘liquor seller’.
