Martha McSally Says She Was Raped By Air Force Superior Officer
US Senator and former fighter pilot Martha McSally on Thursday revealed that she was sexually assaulted by an Air Force superior officer during her time at service.

The Republican Senator spoke about the incident during a hearing on sexual assaults in the US military. She said that she did not talk about the incident earlier because she distrusted the system and was ashamed and confused.

“I was horrified at how my attempt to talk about the rape experience was handled generally”, she said. Martha added that she felt like the ‘system was raping her all over again’.

US Air Force spokesperson said that the branch was shocked and sorry at what McSally had to experience. “The criminal actions reported today by Senator McSally violate every part of what it means to be an Airman.”

The spokesperson said the air force was standing behind Martha and all victims of sexual assault. The branch was also committed to combat sexual assault and harassment. Politicians at the meeting also heard from other service members.

Martha McSally thanked other service members for coming out. She said it is not often that victims of sexual assault come out against their oppressors.

According to UN Women, It is estimated that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives.
