PESHAWAR: Around 12,000 police personnel will be deployed in the provincial capital on the eve of Ashura (10th of Muharram) to ensure foolproof security for imambargahs, processions and mourners.
Providing details of the security plan to media persons, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mohammad Karim Khan said that they have finalised an elaborate plan to ensure peace and security.
It is important to mention here that the control room overseeing security arrangements for Ashura has been set up at Khan Raziq Shaheed Police Station, while CCTV cameras have been installed in different areas of the city to monitor Muharram activities.
He further said that all mourners have to pass through three security checkpoints before joining the procession or entering imambargahs.
Moreover, Karim Khan said that the city police had set up around 61 entry points in different areas of the city which were being guarded by 268 police personnel, while snap checking points had also been established at 565 points in the provincial capital. In addition, at least 42 gun points have also been set up in the city, he added.
The CCPO also said that pre-Muharram search and strike operations have been carried out by police parties across the city in an effort to maintain peace.
The police have carried out around 237 search operations in the city and its outskirts in which several suspects have been rounded off so far, he added.
Further, the police officer said that a command and control centre has been set up to keep a close eye on suspicious activities and to maintain the overall law and order situation. He said that police would ensure strict vigilance of all entry and exit points of the provincial capital, adding that all procession routes would be checked by the bomb disposal squad and sniffer dogs.
Karim Khan said that personnel belonging to the rapid response force and anti-terrorist force would be deployed along with armoured vehicles at all sensitive places inside the city.
In addition, the police officer said that drone cameras would also be deployed to monitor processions. He said that mobile signals would remain suspended on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
He also said that officials of Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco), Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), Rescue 112 and other relevant agencies would be present along with police personnel at the central command post established at Kohati Chowk.
CCPO Karim said that there were 61 imambargahs in the provincial capital and 116 processions would be taken out between 7th and 10th Muharram, while adding that the entire city would be placed on high alert from 6th Muharram onwards. He also said that army personnel would remain on standby and help the police in maintaining security.
Meanwhile, Bannu Commissioner Adil Siddique, while visiting imambargahs and procession routes in Mohallah Sayyedan in Lakki Marwat, requested the locals to promote peace and religious harmony during Muharram and assist the local administration to ensure peace in their respective areas.
