Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in an interview to BBC Urdu, said that he was ‘shocked’ when he heard former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s speech in the Gujranwala rally blaming the military leadership for manipulating the 2018 general elections.
“During the all-parties conference, there was a debate on whether the blame should be laid on one institution or the entire establishment," Bilawal said, adding that it was decided that a single institution would not be named, but the establishment would.
“It came as a shock to me because typically, we don't talk like this at rallies. But Nawaz heads his own party and I can't control what he says, just like he can't control what I say," said Bilawal Bhutto.
Bilawal Bhutto said that naming the institutions was Nawaz Sharif’s personal decision. He, however, added that Sharif must have proofs to back his statement which he should have revealed.
The PPP chairman further said that he could not meet Sharif in person [to discuss the matter in detail] due to the Covid situation. Bilawal added that the demands of Pakistan Democratic Movement doesn’t include the resignation of Chief of Army Staff.
"But Nawaz has the right to take such a stand if he so wishes." Said Bilawal adding that he is certain, Nawaz could not name the individuals without the evidence .
“These are not the kind of allegations you make against anyone during a rally. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have not had the opportunity to meet Nawaz in person, which is very important, so that we can discuss the matter in detail." Bilawal added. He also said that he will meet Nawaz soon to discuss the details and evidence.
Bilawal announced that the individuals will not be named in the PDM rallies.
Information Minister Shibli Faraz responded to Bilawal’s interview on Twitter. “It is clear by Bilawal’s narrative that PDM is not on the same page” he said.
